There are 13 categories of special education as defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). In order to qualify for special education a student must have one of the qualifying disabilities and his/her educational performance must be adversely affected due to the disability.
Students with disabilities shall be educated in the least restrictive environment (LRE). To the maximum extent appropriate, the student is educated with nondisabled peers. The document below outlines the various supports provided to students with disabilities. These supports may be in the form of supporting students within the general education setting or in a small group or self-contained setting.
