Canvas Parent App
Canvas By Instructure (or Canvas, for short) is an online Learning Management System that WTHS, like many other high schools and colleges, is using to make teaching and learning more accessible for our students. To support this endeavor, we have adopted a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) practice permitting students to connect their own devices to a wireless internet network we provide.
Every teacher at WTHS has a Canvas course webpage which will house important aspects of the curriculum. On each teacher’s site, students can access their course syllabus; a single calendar that is synced with all of their courses; course assignments and assessments; course units, or modules, that illustrate the framework of the course; and receive important announcements customized for each student. There are much more advanced features of Canvas such as discussion boards, the ability to create a “flipped classroom,” and many more that we hope will be explored as students and staff become more comfortable with the program. Furthermore, parents can download the Canvas Parent App from either the Google Play store or the iTunes store to view many of the aforementioned features of their child(ren)’s courses.
By utilizing Canvas in WTHS classrooms, students are afforded the opportunity to engage their learning in a 21st Century environment, while being exposed to an educational approach similar to what they may encounter at college. Canvas can be a “game-changer” that allows students to connect with their learning like never before. I trust that as staff and students become more comfortable with the program we will see great benefits. Should you have any questions about a specific course, please contact your child’s teacher. For more general Canvas questions, please contact our grade 10 house principal, Mr. Dan Ortiz at extension 12005.
