What is SEAL in CSD?

Centennial added the "A" to SEL to create SEAL. This reflects our belief that social and emotional learning is an integral part of, and helps to advance, students' academic learning.

In CSD, SEAL means we focus on building and maintaining positive school climates for all staff and students, and on creating opportunities for all students to develop PA Career Ready Skills

Social, Emotional, and Academic Learning is Not

Social, emotional, & academic learning is becoming part of the public consciousness, but there are some broad (and, in some cases, incorrect) definitions out there.

SEAL is not:

  • Replacing regular order and discipline

  • The school taking on the role of the parent

  • Suggesting that today’s generation of kids is somehow broken

  • Therapy

  • Attempting to teach students how to think

  • Advancing a political agenda

  • Taught at the expense of core academic subjects such as math, science, and literacy

This 25-minute podcast episode, Notes from the Backpack, from the National PTA, is a great discussion about the life skills that are important for kids to develop; how families are the first teachers of those skills; and what it would look like when your child’s school fosters those skills.
